Plot Summary

Sabriel is a young adult epic fantasy novel by Garth Nix. First published in 1995, it is the first book in the Old Kingdom series, and it centers around a young girl who must find her necromancer father after he disappears from a magical boarding school. The book won the 1995 Aurealis Award, and it received various other nominations. Nix is an international bestselling author. Before writing Sabriel, Nix worked as an editor and a book publicist. He also served in the Australian Army Reserve for four years. He uses his knowledge of combat in his books.

The protagonist, Sabriel, lives in a kingdom called Ancelstierre. In Ancelstierre, there’s no such thing as magic. However, in the neighboring Old Kingdom, dangerous magical creatures and witches roam wild. Although there’s a strong border between both territories, magic occasionally creeps into Ancelstierre—even if their government denies it.

In the Old Kingdom, people called necromancers raise creatures from the dead. They use these resurrected dead things as servants. One such necromancer is Terciel. His wife gives birth to a girl called Sabriel, but both Sabriel and her mother die during childbirth. Terciel brings Sabriel back to life and sends her to a non-magic school, where she should be safe.



When the book opens, Sabriel is a young teenager. It’s the final semester of the school year, and she’s in the dorms, studying for exams. Without warning, an evil spirit enters the dorms and Sabriel instinctively confronts it. The creature can’t speak at first because it’s weak from the travel. Sabriel is patient with it, and it eventually reveals its purpose—her father’s in trouble, and she must save the kingdom from a powerful magical force while he’s incapacitated.

Sabriel, unsurprisingly, fears the Old Kingdom and she doesn’t want to travel there. She worries that this spirit is tricking her into following it, and that she’ll die across the wall. However, her instincts tell her to trust the spirit, and she ventures into the Old Kingdom in search of her father.

The creature tells her that she must make for her father’s old home, Abhorsen’s House. Here, she’ll meet other necromancers who can help her with her journey. Sabriel is terrified and she feels helpless in the Old Kingdom. She doesn’t see how she can help anyone because she doesn’t understand magic. She doesn’t yet realize that her special connection to the dead, from her resurrection, makes her the perfect match for the nemesis she’s about to face.



While traveling through the haunted Old Kingdom, Sabriel realizes that someone—or something—is stalking her. Before the stalker reveals itself, Sabriel reaches the safehouse. Here, she meets a magical helper creature called Mogget. Mogget can take on any form, and it’s living as a housecat. When Sabriel leaves to find Terciel, Mogget tags along to keep her safe from the walking dead.

The more time Sabriel spends with Mogget, the more danger she’s in. Mogget helps her because he wears a special collar around his neck. If this collar breaks, Mogget will kill her. When the dead attack Sabriel again, she accidentally loosens Mogget’s collar and he attacks her. Only quick thinking saves her from death, and she successfully binds Mogget again. This is her first taste of wielding magic, and she’s a natural.

On their travels, Sabriel and Mogget encounter another strange, magical creature called Touchstone. Sabriel converses with Touchstone and she discovers that he isn’t magical at all—he’s a human man trapped inside a wooden statue. She promises to free him if he helps her find her father. For Touchstone, it’s a fair deal, and he agrees.



Although Sabriel feels safer around her new companions than she feels when she’s alone, she knows she shouldn’t trust anyone completely. When she’s not looking for her father, she’s learning magical rituals to strengthen Mogget’s bindings and protect herself against the dead. Touchstone encourages her, despite Mogget’s protests.

Eventually, Sabriel discovers Terciel. He’s trapped in an underground cave complex, but he’s dead now. He can’t communicate with Sabriel for long, but he gives her a final task to complete. She must help him trap a powerful dead creature called Kerrigor. Terciel can’t trap Kerrigor without her help. If they fail, Kerrigor will destroy the Old Kingdom and the surrounding territories.

Together, Sabriel and Terciel trap Kerrigor. Terciel returns to the dead lands with Kerrigor, and Sabriel mourns his death. Before she returns home, she frees Touchstone from his confines. The trouble isn’t over yet, however. Kerrigor is too powerful to stay dead for long. The only way to destroy him for good is to find his body and break it.



Sabriel, Touchstone, and Mogget find Kerrigor’s corpse. Kerrigor is resurrected, and he kills Sabriel. Terciel and other dead people save her from crossing over and they push her back into life. She must take her father’s place as a necromancer at Abhorsen’s House, and she must destroy Kerrigor forever. Sabriel takes up her father’s title and frees Mogget, who she trusts now with her life.
